  • South African Exports to Face 30% US Tariff as Trump Targets African Trade

The United States has announced a significant increase in tariffs on imports from 20 African countries, with South African products facing the highest tarrifs of 30%.

The new tariffs, which take effect on August 7, were revealed by President Donald Trump in a statement on Thursday.

South Africa, the only country from sub-Saharan Africa to be singled out for the top-tier tariff rate, is expected to be severely impacted.

The United States is South Africa’s second-largest trading partner, and the move threatens to disrupt key export sectors including automotive, agriculture, and mining.

Neighboring countries Lesotho and Zimbabwe were also affected, though at a lower rate of 15%. Other African nations not included in the list will continue to face the 10% baseline tariff introduced in April.

Side note: It's high time Africa starts to trade within, and stop waiting for western validation. It's time to have a single trade currency for the whole of Africa, just like the Euro which is used by European countries to trade. Africa should not wait for the West to dictate its future, Africa should decide its own future. Let's create a single African currency which we can use to trade within. It's time.

  • Peter Obi celebrates his birthday today. Okwute Ndi Igbo. A notable philanthropic gesture was made yesterday with a ₦15 million donation to the UNN Dentistry Department, exemplifying his commitment to education. Despite his reluctance to celebrate birthdays, we are compelled to acknowledge him. Let us overwhelm this post with expressions of goodwill. As a distinguished politician known for his consistency, discipline, and selflessness, he merits celebration. Happy birthday to Peter Obi. May God's guidance and protection continue to be upon him. • The United States President Donald Trump has asked some African countries to accept deported migrants who are not Africans.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the United States sent proposals to five West African presidents, asking them to take in migrants whose home countries won’t accept them.

Nigeria has rejected the United States request, citing they have bigger problems at home.

These are not citizens of those African nations, but people the U.S. wants to offload because their home countries have refused to take them back.

Nigeria’s Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar made the country’s position crystal clear: “We have enough problems of our own… We cannot accept Venezuelan deportees to Nigeria, for crying out loud,” he said.

  • Kenya Removes Visa Requirements for Africans and Most Caribbean Countries

Kenya has officially scrapped visa requirements for citizens of 52 African nations and most Caribbean countries. Africans can now travel to Kenya with just a passport.

The new policy eliminates the need for electronic travel authorization (eTA), visa fees, or paperwork.

Under the new directive, travelers from 52 African nations and several Caribbean states are now allowed visa-free entry into Kenya for up to 60 days. Citizens of East African Community (EAC) member states can stay for up to six months, consistent with EAC free movement protocols.

However, the visa-free policy excludes Libya and Somalia due to security concerns.

  • Zambia has officially secured a 26% stake in Angola’s Lobito oil refinery project, Angola’s largest oil refinery.

The Lobito refinery, currently under construction in Angola’s Benguela Province, is set to become one of Africa’s largest petroleum processing refineries, with a planned capacity of 200,000 barrels per day.

Once completed by 2026, the multi-billion-dollar refinery will refine crude oil for both international and domestic export, including export to Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Zambia becomes a key shareholder alongside Angola’s state oil firm Sonangol (which holds a 30% stake), while the remaining shares are allocated to other regional and private investors.

Part of the agreement will see Angola transports refined petroleum products to Zambia.

Plans are underway to construct a pipeline from Angola to Zambia, enabling direct transport of refined petroleum products to Zambia.

“This is a strategic move to end our historical dependency on distant and costly fuel sources,” Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema said. “We are unlocking long-term energy security for Zambia and the wider region.”

This could lower Zambia’s fuel import costs and lead to retail price reductions of up to 15%.
