  • The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) hosted a roundtable discussion on the theme “Reviewing Petroleum Agreements for the Good of Ghana” at the IEA Dialogue Centre, Accra. The discussion featured a presentation by Mr. Victor Anku-Tsede (Barrister and Solicitor) and brought together key stakeholders including individual experts, relevant institutions, and the media.

The event highlighted that Ghana’s petroleum sector stands at a crossroads, with concerns about legacy petroleum agreements and low government take. It emphasized that reforming these agreements is not a radical proposition but a practical, globally consistent approach to maximising public benefit.

It was a fruitful and engaging discussion that reinforced the IEA’s position that we must "Review the Petroleum Agreements for the Good of Ghana"

  • The History and Legacy of Disrupting African Leadership.

They lived and fought for us all, and for the people whom they've never known. Lions die, leaving behind their mane. Heroes leave this world leaving behind glory and valour to be remembered until the end of time.

Throughout history, the African continent has faced numerous challenges to its stability and progress. One recurring theme is the disruption of visionary African leadership. Many African leaders who championed independence, self-determination, and pan-Africanism faced opposition, including assassination, imprisonment, or exile.

    Examples include:

    - Omar Al-Muktar (Libya )
    - Patrice Lumumba (Congo )
    - Kwame Nkrumah (Ghana )
    - Thomas Sankara (Burkina Faso )
    - Steve Biko (South Africa )
    - Samora Machel (Mozambique )
    - Muammar Gaddafi (Libya )

These leaders' visions for Africa's development and sovereignty often clashed with Europe and the USA's greedy interests. The legacies of these great African leaders continue to inspire Africans today.

Patrice Lumumba: The first prime minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo was murdered by Belgium and USA. They tied him to a tree, shot him, buried him, excavated his remains, hacked his corpse into pieces and dissolved it in sulphuric acid. Since the brutal assassination of Patrice Lumumba by Europeans and European-Americans, the DRC has never been the same again. What was Lumumba's crime? He refused to hand over his country to the colonialists.

Captain Thomas Sankara: The President of Burkina Faso was assassinated in a bloody coup orchestrated by France. Since then, Burkina Faso has never been the same again.

Dr Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah: The first president of Ghana and the founding father of Pan-Africanism. His government was toppled by the USA terrorist group known as the CIA. Since then, there has been political instability in Ghana.

Colonel Muammar Gaddafi: He was shot dead on the street of Libya by the Western-backed Al-Qaeda terrorists. The combined forces of Europe and the USA invaded Libya and bombed our beautiful country back to the stone age, leaving behind sorrow, tears and blood.

After perpetrating all manner of evil in Africa, they will tell Africans to forgive, forget and move on like nothing happened.

How can you bomb my home, kill my loved ones, assassinate my leader and expect me to forgive, forget and move on

  • Is Ghana now the 6th largest economy on the continent?

According to the Central Bank of Ghana (BoG), the economy of the country is valued at $135.1 billion in 2025.

Ghana's economy being valued at $135.1 billion in dollar terms means that the country's total economic output, measured by its Gross Domestic Product (GDP), is estimated to be worth approximately $135.1 billion. This valuation reflects a significant increase from the previous year, driven primarily by :

    - Strong commodity exports: A notable uptick in gold and cocoa exports, with gold exports jumping 40.8% month-over-month from $3.72 billion to $5.25 billion, and cocoa exports rising 22.5% from $1.50 billion to $1.84 billion.

    - Strengthening currency: The appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi against major international currencies has contributed to the upward revision of the economy's valuation in US dollar terms, enhancing Ghana's purchasing power and improving investor sentiment.

In local currency terms, Ghana's economy has expanded to GH¢1.4 trillion as of end-March 2025, representing a GH¢224 billion ($21.6 billion) increase from the GH¢1.176 trillion ($112.9 billion) recorded at the end of 2024. This growth indicates a positive economic trend, with increased output and earnings from key commodities boosting fiscal revenue and improving the country's current account outlook.
