The Benin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Wednesday, August 13, 2025 secured the conviction and sentence of five internet fraudsters before Justice M. Itsueli of Edo State High Court, sitting in Benin City.

The convicts are, Ayo Korede, Ogbemudia Osaretin, Harry Ehimien, Osasumwen Osahenator and Efosa Richard.

They were prosecuted on separate one-count charges, bordering on impersonation, obtaining by false pretence, retention of proceeds of crime and possession of fraudulent documents.
    .
The charge against Osaretin reads: "That you Ogbemudia Osaretin (m) on or about the 31st of July, 2025 within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did have in your possession, in your iPhone 14 Pro Max documents which you knew or ought to have known contained a false pretence and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 6 and 8 of the Advance Fee Fraud and other Fraud Related Offences Act 2006 and punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act.”

They all pleaded “guilty” to their charge, following which the prosecution counsel, I. M. Elodi, I.K Agwai, K.Y. Bello, A. A. Ibrahim, Ibrahim Faisal and M.S.Dahiru prayed the court to convict and sentence them accordingly, while the defence counsel pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy, stating that they have become remorseful for their actions.

Justice Itsueli convicted and sentenced Korede, Osaretin, Osahenator and Richard to two years imprisonment, respectively or to pay N200,000 (Two hundred thousand Naira) fine, each, while he convicted and sentenced Ehimien to two years imprisonment or to pay N100,000 (One hundred thousand Naira) fine or do community service.

All the convicts forfeited their phones, laptop computers and balances in their respective bank accounts, being the tools and proceeds of their crimes, respectively to the federal government and further undertook in writing to be of good behaviour henceforth.

The convicts were arrested by operatives of the Benin Zonal Directorate of the EFCC, following credible intelligence that exposed their involvements in fraudulent internet activities.

  • Just In; Sowore Arrives At Nigerian Police Headquarters With Travel Bag, Soap; Supporters Issue Two-Hour Ultimatum For His Release

Human rights activist and #RevolutionNow convener, Omoyele Sowore, on Wednesday arrived at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in Abuja carrying a travel bag, as he honoured a controversial invitation from the Inspector General of Police’s Monitoring Unit over a petition reportedly filed against him.

Sowore, who arrived at exactly 12:16 p.m., was accompanied by his lawyers, Barristers A.K. Musa and Marshal Abubakar, along with a crowd of supporters chanting anti-government and anti-Kayode Egbetokun songs. His visibly packed travel bag contained personal essentials — including toothpaste, toothbrush, soap, clothing, books, and other items — a symbolic gesture suggesting he was prepared for possible detention.

Tensions escalated as members of the Take It Back Movement and other allied activist groups issued a two-hour ultimatum to the police to either release Sowore or face mass resistance.

“If they refuse to release Sowore, then they must arrest us with him. We are not going to leave here. This is 12:16 p.m., and after two hours, if they fail to release him, then they have to arrest all of us,” declared Princess Mikky, convener of #NUDE NIGERIA.

  • "Suspend Wike immediately and set up an independent panel of inquiry into all FCT land allocations since he assumed office."
~Timi Frank, Bayelsa-born political activist has expressed deep concerns over the disturbing allegations of land grabbing, corruption, and gross abuse of office by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and the deafening silence of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the issue.

▪︎It is alleged that Wike dishes out land on a daily basis to friends, family, and associates, while ordinary citizens and investors with genuine needs for both personal and commercial purposes are sidelined. His actions reportedly extend to revoking land from an embassy just to gift it to a personal associate – a clear case of impunity.

“This blatant disregard for the rule of law will discourage local and foreign investors, leading to economic setbacks for the FCT and Nigeria as a whole.”

“Mr President let me remind you that former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Betta Edu’s case was not as grievous compared to what Wike has done yet you suspended her and sacked her.

“So why is Wike’s case different despite the public expose’? This clearly shows that you are either a beneficiary of Wike’s land grabbing spree or an accomplice by your refusal to act in the face of public outcry against the heist.”

“The continued silence of President Tinubu in the face of these weighty allegations is both troubling and unacceptable. If these actions by the FCT Minister go unchecked, they will tarnish the President’s image and administration.

“What does this silence say about your government, Mr. President? Are you, by omission or commission, endorsing these corrupt practices to build patronage and raise funds for the 2027 elections?”

The failure of the nation’s security and anti-corruption agencies – the Police, EFCC, ICPC and others – to probe the allegations as equally disturbing. Are these institutions now complicit in Wike’s alleged corrupt practices?

“It is shocking that the National Assembly, which has oversight functions over the FCT, has remained quiet despite these allegations. Could it be that they, too, have benefitted from Wike’s land distribution scheme?”

“His record in Rivers State speaks volumes, where he is rumoured to be one of the highest private landowners. Now, he is replicating the same pattern in the FCT, using proxies such as his father, children, siblings, and close friends.

“How did his 95-year-old father or children, who have never worked, suddenly acquire prime lands in Abuja? This reeks of conflict of interest and corruption of the highest order.”

“Mr. President, the Nigerian people are watching. If you fail to act, history will remember that by 2027, you left the indigenous people of Abuja as internally displaced persons in their own city.

“You promised Nigerians a government of integrity. Where is the investigation panel you once vowed to set up? Has it all been lip service?”

“Suspend Wike immediately and set up an independent panel of inquiry into all FCT land allocations since he assumed office.

“Ensure accountability for all public officers involved in this alleged land-grabbing scandal and restore confidence in the rule of law and the sanctity of the FCT’s land administration process.

“Enough is enough! Wike hides under the guise of flashy projects while engaging in unprecedented corruption. Past FCT Ministers developed new districts such as Wuye, Jabi, and Jahi without looting or noise. Why must we tolerate such impunity now?"

“Mr. President, relieve Wike of his duties and let him answer for his sins. Your inaction will only confirm that impunity and corruption are the hallmarks of your administration.”

  • Russian Embassy comment on the Business Day article (July 15, 2025)

We took note of the article How Russia wins friends and influences people by Nicholas Shubitz published in Business Day on July 11, 2025, and found it thought-provoking and partially reflective of the realities of getting education abroad – be it in Russia, USA, China, Europe or elsewhere. Yet, one important issue is missing.

Education has traditionally been one of the most vibrant sectors in #RussiaAfrica relations. Since the early days of African independence, hundreds of thousands of professionals – doctors, engineers, teachers, technicians, and others – have received training in Russia. After completing these studies, most of the graduates return to their home countries, where they contribute to building a better future for their communities.

We firmly believe that Africa is not, and should not be, an arena for geopolitical rivalry.

As President Vladimir Putin emphasized in his article “Russia and Africa: Joining Efforts for Peace, Progress and a Successful Future,” our country has consistently adhered to the principle of “AFRICAN SOLUTIONS TO AFRICAN PROBLEMS,” standing in solidarity with African nations in their pursuit of self-determination, justice, and sovereign rights. Unlike some external actors, we have never sought to impose our values, governance models, or development paths on our African partners.

Our engagement with African countries is guided by the Russia-Africa Partnership Forum Action Plan for 2023-2026, adopted at the highest level. This strategic document outlines broad cooperation in numerous areas, including security, trade, investment, agriculture, science, culture, and – critically – education.

Shane Shauke, a graduate of a Russian University, current medical practitioner and representative of the Russian African Centre of University Studies (RACUS) in SA, shares his experience:
“As a South African from the rural Limpopo province, I had the opportunity to study in Russia. Many of us who studied there were drawn not by political influence, but by the accessibility of quality education – especially in fields like medicine.

Russia’s investment in international students, particularly from Africa, certainly fosters goodwill. It’s equally important to acknowledge that the relationship is not one-sided: African students often return home with valuable knowledge and skills.

Russia may gain friends through education, but those friendships are rooted in complex human experiences, not just political strategy.”
