CONCLUSION OF THE CONTINUOUS VOTER REGISTRATION (CVR) IN ANAMBRA STATE AND UPDATE ON PARTY REGISTRATION
The Commission held its regular weekly meeting today, Thursday 24th July 2025. In continuation of the Commission's preparations for the off-cycle governorship election in Anambra State, the meeting received the final report on the Continuous Registration of Voters (CVR), followed by a presentation by the ICT Department on the portal for party registration.

    Voter Registration in Anambra State

As earlier announced by the Commission, the CVR scheduled to end on 17th July 2025 was extended to 20th July 2025 following appeals by citizens. The final figure of new registrants is 168,187 which is the highest number recorded in two weeks in Anambra State since the introduction of the CVR ahead of the governorship election in 2017.

Although these are preliminary figures pending data clean-up, the detailed breakdown shows that 97,832 (58%) are female while 70,355 (42%) are male. In terms of age, 90,763 (53.97%) are young people aged 18-34 while the occupational distribution shows that 62,157 (36.92%) are businessmen/women while 44,243 (26.31%) are students. In terms of Persons with Disability (PWDs), 303 (24.92%) have physical impediment, followed by 207 (17.02%) with albinism. The detailed breakdown has been uploaded to our website and other platforms for public information.

The immediate next step is to display the preliminary register of new voters for claims and objections by citizens who are the ultimate owners of the register. This will take place in all the 326 Wards in Anambra State from Saturday 26th July 2025 to Friday 1st August 2025. Once this process is concluded, including the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS), the new registrants will be added to the existing register and published on Polling Unit basis ahead of the election.

Thereafter, the Commission will announce the dates and locations for the collection of the Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) for new registrants and those who applied for transfer or replacement of their lost or damaged cards. The PVCs from previous registration will also be available for collection. With 105 days to the election, the Commission is aware of the tight timelines but we wish to reassure all new registrants in Anambra State that their PVCs will be available for collection ahead of the election.

    Update on Party Registration

In our last press release, we assured Nigerians that we are finalising the necessary tests on the party registration portal designed and built in-house by our ICT officials. As is the case with all our IT innovations, the new portal has been demonstrated before the Commission and approved for deployment.

The Commission is evaluating all numerous letters of intent received so far to determine the associations that meet the requirements to proceed to the application stage. A report is expected at our next regular meeting.

Meanwhile, the Commission has received 10 more letters of intent from associations seeking registration as political parties, bringing the number so far to 144. The details of the new associations, including their names, acronyms, logos, addresses and interim leaderships are published on our website and other platforms for public information.

We will continue to update Nigerians on all our activities.

  • Breaking News China has implemented new divorce laws, which stipulate that properties will no longer be divided equally. Individuals will only retain ownership of assets they purchased or contributed to. As a result, couples must maintain receipts for all purchases in the event of separation. This legislation ensures that individuals will not lose substantial assets solely due to divorce. Each party will only retain ownership of assets they brought into or acquired during the marriage. Moral lesson: The introduction of this new law is expected to lead to a decrease in divorce rates by year's end.

  • INEC Meets Political Party Leaders, Sets Date for Bye-Elections, Anambra and Nationwide Voter Registration

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) continued its series of regular consultative meetings with key stakeholders on Day 2 of engagements, with leaders of registered political parties across the country.
In his opening remarks, the INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, provided a comprehensive update on upcoming electoral activities, including the scheduling of bye-elections, the resumption of Continuous Voter Registration (CVR), and preparations for the Anambra State Governorship election.

Prof. Yakubu announced that INEC has fixed Saturday, August 16, 2025, for the conduct of bye-elections in 16 constituencies across 12 states of the federation. The elections will involve 3,553,659 registered voters across 32 Local Government Areas, 356 Wards, and 6,987 Polling Units. The Commission plans to deploy 30,451 election officials for the exercise.
However, the Commission stated that bye-elections will not hold in Khana II State Constituency in Rivers State, due to the ongoing state of emergency, and in Talata Mafara South State Constituency in Zamfara State, owing to a legal dispute regarding the declared vacancy by the State Assembly.

Prof. Yakubu emphasized the tight timeline for conducting the bye-elections, noting that party primaries are to be held from July 17 to 21, 2025, while submission of nomination forms via the INEC portal will begin at 9:00 a.m. on July 22 and close at 6:00 p.m. on July 26. Public campaigns are scheduled to run from August 2 to August 14, 2025.

The INEC Chairman also revealed that the Commission has approved the resumption of CVR at two levels: state-specific and nationwide.
In Anambra State, ahead of the forthcoming governorship election, CVR will take place in all 326 Wards from July 8 to 17, 2025, running daily from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., including weekends. This window will allow new voters, those transferring registration, or seeking replacement of lost or damaged PVCs to update their status. PVCs from previous exercises will also be available for collection at registration centres.
On a national scale, online pre-registration will resume on August 18, 2025, followed by in-person registration on August 25, 2025, across INEC's 37 State and FCT offices and 774 Local Government Area offices nationwide.

Speaking at the meeting, Alhaji Yusuf Dantalle, National Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), reaffirmed the council’s dedication to promoting electoral integrity and democratic governance.

“IPAC is unwavering in its commitment to fostering electoral integrity, political stability and inspiring trust in electoral governance,” Dantalle said.
He urged stakeholders to uphold the sanctity of the ballot and hold elected officials accountable as a means of strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.
Dantalle highlighted the upcoming Anambra Governorship election as an opportunity for INEC to demonstrate technological advancement in election administration, particularly with the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in electoral governance to enhance transparency, reduce risks, and improve voter engagement.

He also commended INEC and the Federal Government for the ongoing construction of the new headquarters annex of the Commission, describing it as a significant step toward improving INEC’s operational efficiency.

The meeting was attended by NationalCommissioners, the Secretary to the Commission, aides to the INEC Chairman, and Directors from various departments within the Commission.

Forget the jollof rice wars — Nigeria just claimed victory in the battle of wits!

In an impressive display of intellect, St. John Vianney Science College from Ukwulu, Anambra State, has taken home the championship title at the UK-Nigeria Debate Competition, outsmarting some of the best schools in the UK and showcasing the brilliance of Nigerian students on an international platform.

They outperformed prestigious UK institutions like Central Foundation Girls’ School and Maghull High, ultimately securing the crown in a thrilling final against St. Augustine’s College, Jos.

Representing Anambra, Nigeria with passion were:
    Chibueze Jennifer Obiokafor Catherine
    Eneoli Benjamin Onwuegbusi Valentine
Guided by: John Onuigbo Supported by: Chiagozie Udorji
Vision led by: Rev. Fr. Ebube Muonso

One of the debaters, Jennifer, summed it up perfectly:

“We had faith in our preparation, trusted one another, and gave it our all. This proves that Nigerian students can compete with anyone globally.”

And here’s the exciting part: these champions will be waving Nigeria’s flag once again in London this December!

The topics ranged from technology to climate change — and guess who took the spotlight? Team Anambra!

A huge shoutout to all four Nigerian schools that participated — including Britarch Schools (Abuja) and Sure Start School (Abuja). We see you!
