  • Court Jails Man Three Years for Cybercrime in Lagos

Justice Ayokunle Faji of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos, on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, convicted and sentenced one Mubarak Suleiman Olasukanmi to three years imprisonment for cybercrime.

He was arraigned on a two-count charge bordering on impersonation and cybercrime by the Lagos Zonal Directorate 2 of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

His travail began following a petition received by the Commission from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, FBI, in 2023, alleging that he engaged in Business Email Compromise, BEC, and online romance scam.

Investigation by the FBI in February 2021 had revealed an attempt at BEC on the City of Aliso Viejo, California, where an employee received fraudulent emails purporting to be from Tovey/Shultz Construction Inc., a construction company.

The fraudulent email requested that Tovey/Shultz Construction Incorporation’s bank accounts be changed to Anoka Wellness’ bank account at Bank of California.

As a result of the email intersection, City of Aliso Viejo electronically wired $521,518.47 to Anoka Wellness’s bank account as a payment intended for Tovey/Shultz Construction, which was later recovered through the quick action of the Orange County Sheriff's Office, OCSD.

It was further revealed that to achieve this deception, several email addresses were used to obtain the fake domain name used to impersonate Tovey/Shultz and its associate’s email address.

About 26 other email addresses were used to create several apple accounts that were tied to one another through common names, addresses and the phone number belonging to Olasukanmi.

The count reads: “That you. MUBARAK SULAIMAN OLASUKANMI (Male), adult sometime in February, 2021 In Logas State, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, fraudulently impersonated one Jackie Love by holding yourself out as such on your Facebook Application with intent to gain advantage for yourself and you thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 22(2Y(5) of the Cybercrimes (Pronibition, Prevention. etc) Act, 2015.”

He pleaded “guilty” to the charges preferred against him.

Following his guilty plea, prosecution counsel, Hannatu U. KofarNaisa, called on Owolabi Oyarekhua, an investigator with the EFCC, to review the facts.

Oyarekhua told the court that the Commission received a petition from the FBI regarding the activities of the defendant.

He added that “Upon his arrest, one iphone 14 was recovered from the him.

“He volunteered his statement under caution, where he confessed that he was into internet fraud and that he specialized in romance scam.

He also involved in dating scam, where he opened profiles on Facebook, using foreign names and pictures. He wrote in his statement that he sent friend requests to foreigners and made friends with those who accepted his requests. He stated that if anyone fell in love with him, he would then request money from the unsuspecting victim. He explained that he presented himself as a female from Texas, USA, using the name Jackie love. He owns and uses the email addresses: jackmorris2573@gmail.com and mindset996@ gmail.com to chat with his victims on hangout.”

The prosecution counsel, thereafter, sought to tender the defendant’s extrajudicial statement, iPhone 14 and documents print out from his iPhone. They were all admitted and marked as exhibits.

Consequently, Justice Faji convicted and sentenced Olasukanmi to one year imprisonment on count 1, without an option of fine, and two years imprisonment on count 2, without an option of fine.

The sentences are to run concurrently, commencing from the date of his sentencing.

  • Governor Otti Declares 2nd Quarter Retreat Open, Reminds Appointees Of the Huge Task Ahead

Governor Alex Otti has reminded members of the State Executive Council and all Appointees of his Government of the enormous tasks ahead of them in the second half of his first term in office.

Governor Otti was speaking on Wednesday, when he declared open, the Abia State Quarter 2 Strategy Retreat organised for his appointees at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia, with the theme, "Sustaining the Momentum: Leadership and Execution".

Gov. Otti said that the focus in 2023 was moving from the drawing board to the field of execution and noted that the last 21 months since the first Executive Council retreat, have served a very useful lesson in public service, managing stakeholders expectations, and striking a fair balance between meeting the urgent needs of the day and repositioning for the opportunities of tomorrow.

"These regular retreat sessions have been institutionalised to enable us to periodically assess ourselves, measure our progress vis-à-viz, the relevant milestones that form the nucleus of our agenda, identify where we may have fallen short, and ultimately determine how to speed up things, subject to the availability of resources.

"The general consensus, even from our friends on the other side of the political divide, is that we have done well in the last two years, raised the bar on governance, and shown a single-minded commitment to the new Abia dream.

"It is important to remind us that we are now operating in a different terrain, where the expectations are dynamic and requires a genuine sense of empathy and broad understanding of our place in the grand scheme of things.

Governor Otti, who warned against laxity and underperformance, urged the participants to leverage the retreat to interact, share knowledge and improve on their performances, emphasising that his government has zero tolerance for mediocrity.

"I would therefore encourage us to take advantage of this retreat to interact, ask questions at the group discussions, and book one-on-one sessions with any team member who can support you to become better,

"Because again, we also have zero tolerance for mediocrity. And, I would like to emphasise at this point that the one-on-one mentorship sessions should actually happen with the members of the Global Economic Advisory Council.

He noted that the current retreat is different from the previous ones as he invited the leadership and members of the Abia Global Economic Advisory Council to attend. He used the opportunity to thank the Council members led by the Co-Chair, Professor Ms. Arunma Oteh, who he said, has since the beginning of the week, been interacting with government officials prior to the commencement of the retreat.

Speaking earlier in his opening remarks, the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Kenneth Kalu, said that the theme of the retreat, "Sustaining the Momentum: Leadership and Execution" is apt, as the credibility of any government does not depend merely on promises but the capacity to deliver.

He said that the challenges before government are not a simple one, adding that, that was the essence of the plan to sustain the momentum that has been achieved already.

Prof Kalu stressed on the need for effective collaboration among government officials and reminded them that while ideas and visions are celebrated, they only achieve meaning through disciplined and collaborative implementation.

The day 1 of the 2nd quarter EXCO Strategy Retreat was attended by members of the Abia State Global Economic Advisory Council and all Appointees of the Government.

  • Embrace Integrity, Olukoyede Urges Students

The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mr. Ola Olukoyede has charged students in the country to shun all forms of economic and financial crimes and embrace a life of integrity for a fulfilling future.

He gave the charge recently during the induction of students of Excellent Kiddies Academy, Bwari, Abuja into EFCC’s Integrity Club.

Represented by the Head of the Interface Unit of the Public Affairs Department of the EFCC, Assistant Commander of the EFCC I, Tony Orilade, Olukoyede emphasized the importance of moral uprightness among young people, urging them to surround themselves with individuals who uphold integrity and positive values.

“To secure a brighter future, you must get it right from the beginning. Surround yourself with good people, friends and acquaintances that will help you grow in wisdom and integrity,” he said.

While warning them against associating with individuals involved in financial crimes, he stated that negative influence from such people could draw them to criminal behaviours and that could in turn, earn them grave consequences.

“Anyone who engages in financial crimes is on a path that leads to jail. Once convicted, such a person becomes an ex-convict and loses the opportunity to hold any public office in Nigeria. That is a heavy price to pay for associating with the wrong crowd,” he said.

Olukoyede further stated that the project of inaugurating EFCC’s Integrity Club in primary and secondary schools was part of the Commission’s policy of “catching them young,” which is about nurturing children to be ambassadors of integrity in their homes, schools, communities, and the country at large.

Also speaking at the event, the Head of Enlightenment and Reorientation Unit of the Commission, Assistant Commander of the EFCC II, Aisha Mohammed, enlightened the children on the functions and activities of the EFCC. She encouraged them to be honest, disciplined, and upright in their daily lives, noting that integrity is a crucial ingredient for success.

“Youths must understand that honesty and integrity are values that never go out of fashion. They open doors and keep you on the right path in life,” she said.

The highlight of the induction ceremony was a quiz competition that dwelt on EFCC and its operations. Two students, Glory Okinbaliyi and Divine Oyaniyi Bimbola emerged winners and were rewarded with android smartphones.

In his vote of thanks, the Integrity Club Master of the school, Mr. Gbenga Jatau, expressed appreciation to the EFCC Chairman and management his team for bringing the club to the school.

“On behalf of the management, staff, and students of Excellent Kiddies Academy, I extend our heartfelt gratitude to the EFCC Chairman for this great honour. We applaud the Commission’s unwavering commitment to fighting all forms of economic and financial crimes and building a better Nigeria,” he said.

  • To my little understanding about life , no power in on the surface of this earth can make you who you want to be including God, Angels, Miami water, demons, government , parents, and friends without you. The whole thing about you becoming who you want to be is at 90percent depending on you.

I said it again anything you depend on outside you has taking your energy , I mean you have handover your energy to it, he, her, will become your lord and you will become useless in what you want to be in life.
