  • Did You Know? Before the onset of the war, the Igbo region had the distinction of being the most literate in Nigeria. In the early 1960s, the Eastern Region had achieved the highest school enrollment and literacy rate in the country. Between 1960 and 1967, a remarkable over 90% of children in the East were enrolled in primary schools. The presence of thriving missionary and community-led schools in the region was a notable feature. The establishment of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Nigeria's first indigenous university, in the East in 1960, was a significant milestone. It highlighted the Igbo people's strong emphasis on education. The Eastern Region's rapid development, earned it the nickname "The African Japan", driven as it was by education, trade, and innovation. This progress is all the more remarkable given that it predated the discovery of oil, the war, and federal allocations. It was a testament to the Igbo values of self-help, community, and knowledge. Now you know. The Igbo people have consistently demonstrated their pioneering spirit, not just in the realm of business, but also in education.

EFCC, DSS in Renewed Collaboration The Ag. Zonal Director of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Abuja Zonal Directorate, Assistant Commander of the EFCC, ACE I Michael Wetkas, has called for stronger collaboration between the Commission and the Department of State Service, DSS. He said this while on a scheduled courtesy visit to the Federal Capital Territory, FCT Command of the DSS. Wetkas noted that it was important for him to seek collaboration from other law enforcement agencies following his posting to Abuja Zonal Directorate in March 2025. He noted the DSS as one of the key security and law enforcement agencies in the country and stressed that it was pertinent for the EFCC to strengthen the already existing collaboration with it. He recalled his experience as the Zonal Commander in Gombe and Lagos where he learnt the importance of collaboration between the Commission and the DSS especially in information sharing. “The meeting is for me to introduce myself and my team to you because in the course of this job, we will always be meeting and we need each other always”, he said. He further noted that the EFCC is open to a deeper working relationship with the DSS. The State Director of Security, Usman N. Dauda, who spoke through Deputy Director, Operations, Babangida Aliyu , appreciated the EFCC for the visit saying that the meeting was timely and also called for more collaboration on technical and operational levels. • THE KILLERS OF KADUNA STATE CITIZENS IN MANGU LG OF PLATEAU STATE MUST BE BROUGHT TO JUSTICE

We received with shock and deep sorrow news of the killing of 12 Kaduna State citizens in the troubled Mangun District of Mangu Local Government, Plateau State. 11 others sustained various degrees of injuries. The innocent travellers met their deaths while traveling to Quan Pan Local Government of Plateau State for a wedding ceremony.

We condemn in the strongest terms these acts of savagery. The criminals must be fished out and dealt with accordingly. We call on security agencies to leave no stone unturned until these criminal elements are hunted down and brought to justice. We must put a stop to the nefarious activities of non-state actors. There is no justification for anybody to attack any citizen of Nigeria in any part of the country. This madness must stop. Enough is enough.

I also call on the Plateau State Governor, His Excellency, Barrister Caleb Mutfwang to use this unfortunate incident to make a bold statement. He must take full charge of the situation and direct the operations of the security agencies until the murderers are brought to justice. I will personally follow up on the progress made in the investigations and field operations in search of the criminals. We must send a clear signal that impunity will no longer be tolerated.

Let me use this opportunity to call on the citizens of Kaduna State to remain calm. All hands are on deck to ensure that our murdered citizens get justice. We have made remarkable progress in peace building and conflict transformation in Kaduna State. The Kaduna Peace Model is a pointer to the fact that with political will, commitment and sincerity of purpose, a toxic environment can be turned to an "oasis of peace". The situation in Plateau State is not irredeemable. The bloodshed must stop.

Our deepest condolences to the families of our citizens who lost their precious lives in Mangu Local Government. I am in touch with the families of the victims. We shall do all in our power to lessen their pains. We shall also ensure that the injured victims receive adequate medical attention. May the gentle souls of our departed citizens rest in perfect peace.

    Senator Uba Sani, CON
    Governor, Kaduna State.

  • Fear of Assassination: Iran’s leader Khamenei chooses three successors, skips son

The Islamic Republic of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has reportedly handpicked three potential successors in case he is killed during Israel’s ongoing military campaign — a revelation that signals unprecedented urgency inside Tehran’s highest ranks.

According to an investigative report by The New York Times on Saturday, the 86-year-old Supreme Leader, now operating from a fortified bunker, privately named three senior clerics to assume power should he die during the conflict.

The Times cites “senior Iranian officials” who say Khamenei made the selections after a string of high-level assassinations by Israeli forces.

Significantly, Khamenei’s influential son, Mojtaba, long rumoured to be groomed for succession, was not included in the list.

This marks a dramatic shift from years of speculation that a dynastic handover was being engineered behind the scenes, Jerusalem Post also reports on Saturday.

“Khamenei has nominated three clerics as potential successors while hiding in a bunker… Mojtaba is not among them,” reported The New York Times, citing confidential Iranian sources close to the leadership.

Meanwhile, The Jerusalem Post corroborated the report, noting that the Supreme Leader has also “selected replacements down his military chain of command” in anticipation of further Israeli strikes that could decimate his inner circle.

Under normal conditions, Iran’s Supreme Leader is chosen by the Assembly of Experts — an 88-member clerical body.

But Khamenei’s reported actions suggest he is attempting to shape that outcome in advance, potentially bypassing traditional structures to preserve his ideological legacy and prevent internal fractures.

Analysts say the selection of three clerics, rather than one, reflects both a lack of consensus within Iran’s ruling elite and the urgency of contingency planning as the threat level escalates.

While names have not been officially released, the report indicates the candidates are figures trusted by Khamenei and aligned with the regime’s hardline core.

    Implications Beyond Iran
The move has immediate geopolitical consequences. With the region on edge following Israeli strikes on senior Iranian and Hezbollah commanders, the specter of regime instability could further inflame the Middle East.

It also raises questions about the viability of Iran’s leadership structure should Khamenei be incapacitated.

“Khamenei’s action signals a regime that sees the risk of decapitation as real,” said a senior regional intelligence official quoted in The New York Times. “It is succession planning not in theory — but under fire.”
